The Kundig Remodel

Design Principal: Tom Kundig
Design Collaborator: Alan Maskin

In the architect’s own words: “Living and dining areas are combined and a large, off-center pivoting steel door can either connect or conceal the kitchen. The resulting design emphasizes the simplicity found in the holistic treatment of the house and garden: a singular vision that relies on a limited palette of materials and elegant proportions of space.

Mahogany

The entry hall is lined with mahogany. If you push gently close to one of the edges, you’ll feel the mahogany give a little, and then push back. Behind these large panels are numerous closets. One of them has a half bath inside! And when you step into the main living area and turn back towards the front door, you’ll see shelves upon shelves for all of your books – rolling library ladder included. There is additional mahogany in the master suite – a mahogany dresser can be found in each of the walk-in closets.

Steel Pivot Doors

The first of the two steel pivot doors welcomes you into this stunning home. It features a beautiful notched handle and is flanked by two glass panels.

The second of the steel pivot doors is at the heart of the home, serving as a focal point between the kitchen and the main living area. It includes a track on the floor to guide it smoothly.

Steel Eaves

The use of polished steel throughout the home is remarkable. The eaves caught my attention – starting with the large eave over the front door, through to the individual eaves over each of the windows along the back of the home. Tying it all together is the design of the fireplace in the main living area, which is cut and bent to mimic the eaves on the exterior.

Walls Of Windows

Taking advantage of the lush and private setting, the home lets the outside in through a series of large, and numerous, windows throughout the home.
